Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the pushing forces and subjective discomforts (hand/writst, shoulder, low back, and overall) of the two handle types with different handle height and distance conditions. Background: Pushing and pulling were known as risk factors for low back and shoulder pains, and physiological load. Many studies were conducted to find the appropriated task conditions for pushing and pulling tasks. Method: Seven female students participated in the experiment. Maximum pushing forces and perceived discomfort (hand/wrist, shoulder, low back and overall) were evaluated for various handle conditions. Handle conditions were varied in the handle angle (0, 90), distance (narrow: shoulder width, wide: 1.5*shoulder width), and height (low: anticardium height-0.15*stature, high: anticardium height+0.15*stature). Results: It was found that there was no significant main effect of three independent variables on the pushing force (p>0.05). The previous study showed the height and angle had significant main effects on the pushing force. These differences between male and female subjects may be due to the weaker pushing forces of female subjects than male subjects. Only interaction effect of angle and height was statistically significant (p<0.05). Horizontal handle (angle=0) showed bigger pushing force in high position than in low, but vertical handle (angle=90) showed bigger pushing force in low position than in high. Correlation analysis between pushing force and discomfort showed negative correlations, but showed no significance (p>0.05). Conclusion: The main effects of angle, distance, and height were not significant. Proper handle height was different according to handle angle in maximizing pushing forces. Application: Results of this study can be applied to the design of handles of carts or in determining horizontal pushing force data for various handle conditions.
