Objective: The present study is to assess different vacuum handles in terms of motion, electromyography, push force, and satisfaction for usability improvement. Background: Existing studies have mainly evaluated diameter and size of cylindrical handles in terms of force and satisfaction; however, not expanded into ergonomic vacuum handles.Method: Six vacuum handles were evaluated in terms of motion, electromyography, push force, and satisfaction for three directions (-60°, 0°, and 40°) in a natural front-to-back cleaning task to 36 participants. The motion was evaluated as deviation of comfortable range of motion (CROM) to shoulder and wrist; the electromyography as force exertion rate to deltoid, biceps, flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU), and flexor carpi radialis (FCR); the push force as frontal push force; the satisfaction as 21 usability criteria using 7-point scale. Results: Deviation of CROM of vacuum handle for cylindrical type was lower 58% compared to that for rectangular type; force exertion rate more than 15% to FCU and FCR lower 30%; satisfaction of appropriateness in terms of usability higher 1.4 points. Application: The vacuum handle analysis results in terms of motion, electromyography, push force, and satisfaction would be applicable to ergonomic vacuum handle design.
