Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the workload and harmful factors of the musculoskeletal system by conducting an ergonomic assessment by investigating the factual survey of the manual garlic collection task.

Background: Task improvement based on ergonomic assessment is the current trend. For this purpose, it is necessary to analyze the level of workload through ergonomic assessment when collecting garlic manually.

Method: For the assessment of musculoskeletal risk factors in the manual garlic collecting task, RULA, REBA tools, and 3D SSPP were used for assessment. For the manual work, people visiting the garlic farmland were photographed, and additional task postures were assessed by filming reenactments through interviews. Correlation analysis and ANOVA analysis were performed to analyze whether the worker"s body information and the weight of the handled things during task had a relative influence on the workload (L4/L5, L5/S1 compression force) for each postures.

Results: As a result of RULA and REBA assessment of manual garlic collecting task, the Risk level was found to be "High" and "Very high". During the dynamic simulation using 3D SSPP, the workload (L4/L5, L5/S1 compression force) was found to be the highest in the task posture in which the lower back was bent or twisted, and the leg and trunk were the most burdened. In addition, the higher the height and weight among the body information, the greater the work load, and there was a statistically positive correlation. The greater the load applied to the hand, the greater the workload, and a statistically positive correlation was found.

Conclusion: The results of statistical analysis based on the ergonomic assessment of musculoskeletal hazard investigation RULA and REBA assessment and dynamic simulation showed that all manual garlic collecting tasks required improvement in working posture. In addition, the reason that the workload is correlated with height and weight is that the distance from the tip of the upper body to the lumbar spine increases, and as the load increases, the torque value acting on the lumbar spine increases.

Application: In this study, the results of the garlic collecting task factual survey and task postures analysis and the presentation of further research directions are presented as basic research data for improving the garlic collecting task postures and for the future development of the garlic industry.
