This study investigates the effect of storytelling-based instruction on the English speaking abilities of Korean university students. The experiment was conducted for 44 students who took an English course at university for 16 weeks. The two homogeneous groups as confirmed through the pre-test were divided into an experimental group taught by storytelling-based instruction and a control group taught by a traditional teaching method only with the contents of the textbook. After storytelling-based instruction, students were asked how they perceived their development as L2 speakers. The picture-cued narrative task was used in the pre- and post-test. The five sub-skills of speaking are fluency, grammatical accuracy, discourse, sociolinguistic competence, and task completion. The main result is that storytelling-based instruction was more effective at improving overall English speaking ability and all five speaking sub-skills compared to the traditional teaching methods. Most of the students’ perceptions of their development as L2 speakers was positive. Therefore, this study confirms that storytelling-based instruction can play a positive role in enhancing the English speaking ability of university students and motivating learners with low English proficiency and interest.
