This study aims at investigating the decision process of middle school girls who are situated in study and training as judo athletes. 7 middle school girls who are judo athletes in Seoul and Gangwon Province participated in participatory observation and in-depth interview.
The student-athletes made their decision based on imitation of colleague players, poor academic achievement, demand level of exercise participation, interference of their parents, impact of school and related Judo officials, and their own enthusiasm.
The decision was made by social decision making process as a group rather than personal individual decision process. The decision making process of student-athletes under goes the following steps;
1st step, searching for the other student-athlete who is in the same situation. 2nd step, forming association with them in order to act together. 3rd step, modifying opinion among their association. This often includes vote among themselves. 4th step, following their converged opinion. Final step, the more powerful decisive parties were school teachers, Judo related officials, and their parents than student-athletes themselves.
The result of the current study can be used as baseline data to provide student-athletes have a choice over study and training as equivalent parts in their lives and it can provide them as guidance when they choose study over training and life as an athlete.
