This study introduces the history and analyzes the current conditions of the Presbyterian Church in Korea (Hapdong) (hereinafter referred to as “Hapdong Order”), which is currently the biggest religious order among the Protestant Christian orders in Korea. This researcher takes the viewpoint of an observer rather than that of an insider in analyzing the current position and characteristics of the Hapdong Order in Korea.
This study is divided roughly into two parts. The first part briefly describes the origin of the Presbyterian Church system and the growth process of the world Presbyterian Church, focusing on its direct relation with the Presbyterian Church in Korea. The different periods of development of the Presbyterian Church from the time it first came into Joseon at the end of the Joseon dynasty to the present time are discussed, with emphasis on the development process of organizations. The religious influence of the Hapdong Order has grown rapidly 120 years since the Presbyterian Church came into the Korean peninsula, thus it has become Korea"s popular religion both nominally and virtually.
The second part deals with the current conditions, or the religious characteristics of the Hapdong Order. The religious characteristics are categorized into the doctrine, organizations, and ritual characteristics the doctrine is discussed with focus on the characteristics inherent only to the Hapdong Order. The Hapdong Order is currently differentiated from the world Presbyterian Church in that its doctrine does not have the official interrelationship between the domestic and overseas religious orders. The organizations are described with emphasis on the political system and job responsibilities of the Presbyterian Church, while the ritual characteristics of the Hapdong Order are discussed with focus on examining the changes in the ritual. Some pending controversial issues are likewise discussed to explain the current conditions of the Hapdong Order. These issues include changes in the religious influence, the rejection of the female imposition of hands, and the weakening of the triumph of good over evil.
