Background: Virtual reality simulation-based education creates opportunities for nursing students to develop competency as a self-directed learning strategy to complement existing didactic learning and simulation-based strategies. This study aimed to investigate the relationships among nursing students’ clinical competence, confidence, presence, and learning immersion, and to analyze the students’ experiences with a virtual reality simulation of blood transfusion.
Methods: The participants were 32 third-year undergraduate nursing students. The quantitative data were analyzed using IBM’s SPSS software, Version 22.0. The qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis.
Results: The learning immersion was positively correlated with confidence (r=.401, p=.023) and presence (r=.672, p＜.001). The experiences were classified into two major categories: “advantages” and “disadvantages.” From the “advantages” category, six themes were derived: “easy immersion in the situation,” “improvement of memory for procedures,” “immediate interaction with performance,” “motivation for learning,” “freedom of use time,” and “repetitive learning.” From the “disadvantages” category, four themes were derived: “difficulty in operating machines,” “sometimes dizziness when used twice in a row for 10 minutes,” “lack of detailed expression,” and “difficulty learning about complex situations.”
Conclusion: The study provided valuable feedback on the virtual reality simulation-based education, suggesting further refinements to improve nursing students’ clinical competence, confidence, presence, and learning immersion in blood transfusion practice.
