In the Western world today, music is thought of more as an entertainment than as a source of enlightenment. So, it might seem odd to be connecting music with enabling a person to achieve their highest psychological and moral development, which in philosophical terms is known as the highest good. And yet, since the beginning of written history, great thinkers around the world have been interested in why music is such a powerful guiding force, both for individuals and whole cultures.
This article takes a closer look at the world of music in order to better understand not only how it contributes to the highest good, but also how it creates greater harmony – not only within the individual, but also between people. It relies on philosophy, psychology, spirituality, and neuroscience to make its points. Perspectives from the East, and examples of music from other cultures, will also give insight into music’s value.
One of the aims of these reflections is to move the reader towards a more conscious use of music. To that end, ways in which an individual can more fully extend the musical experience in his or her life are presented. When a larger consciousness surrounds it, more people will be able to take greater advantage of all the good that music has to offer. In turn, this will make our world a better, more harmonious place to live.
