Purpose: Heat Recovery Ventilators(HRV) consist of heat exchangers, supply fans, exhausted fans, dampers, and filters. In the case of filters, while pre-filters were used generally in the past, for now the opinion that ‘HEPA filters are needed’ is dominant because of ultra fine dust elimination in Korea. However, there is little research on how big is the difference in HRV performances between pre-filters and HEPA filters in apartment housing. In fact, if the HEPA filters are installed in existing HRV, it can cause increase in fan powers, decrease in air flow rates, and indoor air quality deterioration. For this reason, experimental research on energy consumption and ultra fine dust reduction with the application of different filters in the HRVs were analysed based on field experiments in the commonest type of apartment housing in Korea. Method: The 84㎡type apartment unit was selected for the filed experiments. Using a medium filter and HEPA filter, the changes in fan power and ultra-fine dust reduction effects were analyzed. Result: In the experiment condition, assuming the time for pre-filter to remove PM2.5 dusts is 1, the medium filter spent 0.65~0.84 time and the HEPA filter took 0.46~0.54 time of the pre-filter’s. In addition, in terms of fan power consumptions, the medium filter spent 3~5% higher fan power than the pre-filter’s fan power with the HEPA filter consuming 8~16% higher fan power.
