The aim of the present study is to analyze English free relative clauses on the basis of data collected from Corpus of Contemporary American English and Corpus of Global Web-Based English. This study examines the factors that cause the selection of whatever-conditional free relative clauses and whichever-conditional free relative clauses. The corpus analyses show that genre, verb types, and noun types can affect the choice between whatever-conditional free relative clauses and whichever-conditional free relative clauses. The results reveal that whatever-conditional free relative clauses are related to FICTION genre, whichever-conditional free relative clauses associated with MAGAZINE genre. It is also found that whatever-conditional free relative clauses contain ACTION verb type and ABSTRACT CONCEPTS/EMOTION STATE noun type whereas whichever-conditional free relative clauses contain ACTION/CAUSATION/OCCURENCE/EXISTENCE verb type and PERSONS/ANIMALS/CONCRETE OBJECTS/SPACE noun type. Moreover, American English is closely associated with whatever-conditional free relative clauses while British English is more related to whichever-conditional free relative clauses. This paper claims that corpus-based linguistic analysis of grammatical structures enables us to identify syntactic and semantic properties in English free relative clause constructions.
