In this study, high-school students' awareness about major concepts of biotechnology that were presented prominently in the biology textbooks was examined. Five hundred and thirty one high school students who studied different science subjects were asked to fill out a questionnaire which was composed of 114 items. The results of the survey were as follows. First, students did not even know well the fundamental biological concepts required to understand biotechnology. Second, students who had not studied the biotechnology answered that they had rarely heard of the biotechnology concepts such as genetic recombination. However, they answered that they had frequently heard of the concepts which they had already learned or which could be encountered through the mass media. Third, even the students who had studied biotechnology did not know well about biotechnology fields and their applications. They answered that they had frequently heard of them but did not know well about the fields of biotechnology and the related concepts which could be encountered through the mass media. This was much the same results as those of the students who had not studied biotechnology at all. In particular, they reported that they had hardly heard of and did not know about the concepts such as restriction enzymes, recombinant DNA, and monoclonal antibodies.
