This study approaches the idea of theatricality and observes Shakespearean characterization in the text of Richard III, focusing on communicative theatricality, which means that a drama text fundamentally assumes the dynamic relations over the space in the theatre. Richard III invites the audience into the dramatic world and makes them participate in his own conspiracy through dramatic devices. He justifies his vicious acts by using such theatrical devices as repetitive and self-revealing soliloquies and asides. With his theatrical ingenuity, he warps the traditional value system and eliminates his political adversaries. This is why this play, despite the villainous nature of the title character and the grim storyline, succeeds in fascinating the spectators and getting them to applaud. Shakespearean histories have been analyzed with his political intentions as to whether he serves the Elizabethan authority. This paper links the two ends, politics and aesthetic appreciation, and examines how politics and theatricality are interwoven in Shakespeare’s historical plays.
