The people with developmental disabilities (PwD) require special support because of the inherent characteristics of the disability, which limit their daily and social activities. In addition, PwD have difficulties in their occupational activities because of their disability characteristics. Some indicators show that the status of economic activity of PwD is significantly worse than that of the other types of disabled people as well as the whole population.
In this context, in order to expand the employment of PwD, many government agencies and public institutions have provided various employment services for PwD. However, employment services that were provided to PwD are still insufficient in terms of quantity, and the provided services do not take into consideration of the characteristics of PwD, have confusion of roles among the employment service providers, are lack of the linkage between delivery systems, and the provision of employment services do not reflect the life-cycle of PwD.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the employment status of PwD systematically, to diagnose their performance and problems, and to examine the present situation of foreign countries (for exampel Japan, USA, United Kingdom, Germany) in order to elucidate alternatives for the future employment of PwD in Korea. In this study, we used methods like data analysis, secondary data analysis, and Focus Group Interview(FGI) in order to find the alternatives to expand the employment of PwD. In the conclusion section, we proposed various alternatives derived from the research to expand the employment of PwD.
