In this study, to improve surface properties and the printability of coated board, five kinds of the pre-coating formulation were evaluated on the condition of high solid coating (solid content: 68 wt%-69.5 wt%). The main ingredients for coating formulation were prepared by three kinds of the inorganic pigments with different particle size distribution. In the coating formulation, although two kinds of precipitated calcium carbonate were applied to improve fluidity of the coating color, ground calcium carbonate was mainly used as coating ingredient in order to solve the rheological problems accompanying high solid coatings. The low and high shear viscosity of the coating colors were measured. Optical property and printability of the coated board samples were evaluated. As a result of the formulation of two PCCs with different particle sizes in GCC, the low shear viscosity was slightly increased, but the high shear viscosity was lowered and the runnability was improved. As a result of applying the coating color designed for this purpose, the gloss, brightness and whiteness of the coated board as well as the printing mottle and the ink set off were improved.
