In narrative expression, various mise-en-scéne elements may serve as indirect dramatic devices by shaping the atmosphere of a production and attracting the attention of the audience. Among mise-en-scéne elements, colors and shapes not only describe a character’s social status, role, and preferences in terms of character design but also imply various other messages, such as the situation at hand and fate of a character. When colors and shapes that are formed according to a priori, historical, or social experiences are used appropriately in character or background design, the audience may unconsciously recognize the meanings of the said elements. Moreover, the colors used for these characters may harmonize or contradict one another as the characters themselves interact accordingly, thus also describing the relationship between characters. The formative features formed by colors and composition of major events in a production are significant, not only in terms of their roles in the portrayal of spaces but in what they reveal through interactions between characters. These changes follow the flow of a story, and, on the whole, tell the story by creating visual rhythms through changes in color.
