Housing in Korea has been undergoing changes in response to various changes through time. It used to be recognized as one of the components as “food, clothing, and shelter,” which are necessary for human life, but with continued improvement in the quality of living in Korea, thanks to industrialization and urbanization, the meaning of housing has changed to “a means of asset accumulation,” “a result of social status,” etc., and apartment houses have established its status as representing the popular housing culture in Korea.
Thus, housing promotion centers, where consumers and construction companies could interact with each other, were popularized and, due to construction companies’ high-end strategies, competition with other construction companies, and promotion strategies to improve recognition among consumers, have undergone various stages of change. Since the largest housing crisis (accumulation of unsold housing units) that began in 2008, the trend has been to reduce unnecessary cost. Problems, such as huge construction cost and environmental pollution, caused the size of housing promotion centers and the number of UNITs built to decrease, and Korea has now entered a stage where virtual image halls are actively used as substitute promotion spaces for UNITs.
This study, after covering changes in housing promotion centers in Korea and examples of virtual image halls, suggests in its conclusion design methods that can reduce the burden of consumers and construction companies through small-size housing promotion centers.
