This paper investigates about stone Buddha statue which call ‘Gungye(弓裔) Maitreya’ Gungye was a king who built a country which called Taebong(泰封) This is one of the country in the Later Three Kingdoms.
“Gungye Maitreya” means stone Buddha images that have folktales related with Gungye There are many articles which investigate about folktales that are relate with Gungye The conclusion of the most articles is that Gungye’s folktales have strong reality Not only folklore but archaeology and history also show that Gungye’s folktales have the historical facts.
Even in the “Gungye Maitreya” also have storng historical facts In Korean peninsula, there are four places which have “Gungye Maitreya” Each of two places are actually same district Each district have one “Gungye Maitreya” “Gungye maitreya” in each district is assumed that made by Gungye’s order at his period One is a Gisolri stone Buddha statue the other is a Guuepri stone Budda statue Gisolri is located in Ansung city, Guuepri is situated in Pochun city.
This paper presumed that Gisolri stone Buddha statue was made for commemoration of Gungye’s victory in the Benesung battle After this battle, Gungye could control middle of the Korean peninsula Also this paper presumed that Gisolri stone Buddha face have Gungye’s face Because Gisolri Buddha’s face have open lip that looks like a bow in the middle of the bow(lip) there is an arrow Gungye(弓裔) means literally a descendent of bow In Korea, there is no Buddha statue that open his mouse Nobody could open Buddha’s mouse because Buddha is the absolute being Only Gungye who called himsef a Maiteya could made a Buddha who open his mouse.
Guuepri stone Budda statue is also presumed that was made in Gungye’s period This statue is located near the Banwall castle that was re-made by Gungye Especially, the place that the stone Buddha stands was a temple This paper investigates that the temple was used by Gungye’s troop Because the geopolitical reason, Guuepri stone Buddha statue also made in Gunye’s period.
