The purpose of this paper is to inquire into John Calvin`s typology of the first and last Adam in his commentary on Romans 5 and I Corinthians 15. Calvin, in fact, barely employs “the second Adam” or “the last Adam” in his commentaries or Institutes. This, however, does not necessarily connote that he reckons this typology as peripheral, because he simply uses “Adam” and “Christ”. Considering Adam and Christ as the two origins or roots of the human race, Calvin finds every justification for calling Adam the first man, and Christ the last. Respecting the purpose of this typology, Calvin states that only when we are shown what we have lost in Adam we come to a clearer realization of what we possess in Christ. This paper focuses on the following four issues: 1) What have we lost in the first Adam and what do we possess in the last Adam?; 2) Does the last Adam surpass the first Adam?; 3) Are we merely restored to the original state of the first Adam before the Fall or are we regenerated to a better state in the last Adam?; 4) What are the specific ways we are related to each Adam?
