I have examined numerous pieces of eco-poetry that deal with air pollution to see whether these pieces can contribute to solving environmental pollution. Many of these pieces have been written since 1970’s.
40 years ago, Seong Chan-kyung specifically emphasized the direct consequences of environmental pollution through his poem, “The Era of Pollution and a Poet”(공해시대와 시인). He strongly insisted that people should put their hands together to solve the problem.
30 years ago, Lee Gun-chung dealt with the gas emission incident in the city of Bhopal, India, and its impact on the environment through his piece, “For the Blind“(눈 먼 자를 위하여). The description of a family in this poem enabled readers to vicariously experience the pain and agony of the incident.
20 years ago, Jung Hyun Jong’s “Teardrop”(이슬), and “Seeds of Cloud”(구름의 씨앗) were intended to share his ecological visions with readers. He insisted that the first step to solve environmental pollution is to overcome our greed and anthropocentricism.
The poet, Seo Rim wrote “Even When an Ozone Alert is Issued” (오존주의보가 내려도) which illustrated his determination to maintain his position on the pollution issue as a poet. This determination allowed him to publish “The Spread of the Rice Seed”(볍씨를 뿌리듯이) 10 years later. This poem suggested that we can overcome pollution and move forward to a better and healthier future by harvesting and protecting new lives on the ground.
In the Republic of Korea, not many poems on air pollution were written among eco-poetry. Although there are not many poems on air pollution, many poets still devout their lives to protecting our environment through their work. Eco-poetry allows people to shift focus. Eco-centric awareness is intended to curb our excessive greed and desire and shift our focus and action for the improvement of our environment.
