Korean multicultural education has been strongly propelled by government"s policy efforts which have a strong intention to assimilate abruptly rising foreigners into Koreandominated society. Historically, as a unique one-racial state, Korea didn"t suffer from serious multicultural phenomena or challenges. However, with ever-rising married immigrants and foreign workers since 1990s, Korea has swiftly turned into a multicultural society. In this situation, Korean government has ambitiously and quickly pushed ahead with multicultural education in primary and secondary school without deep consultations with civilian specialists working in theoretical and philosophical foundation of multiculturalism.
And, because of this historical and institutional backgrounds, Korean multicultural education has shown mainly three problems. First, it focuses only on policy-oriented and pragmatic purpose to cope with multicultural threats. Second, it reveals theoretical and philosophical shallowness. Third, it lacks social deliberation and consensus in developing how to teach multicultural education in classrooms. This paper consists of two parts. First of all, this paper analyses current situation and problems of Korean multicultural education in primary and secondary school. And then, this paper proposes some suggestions for the reform and reorientation of Korean multicultural education.
