On application of blue covarine on the tooth surface, a change in surface color from yellow to blue is observed (CIE b*) in CIELAB. This change in color is an indication of teeth whitening. This study was designed to evaluate the tooth whitening effect and whitening loss in regards to time. Healthy enamel and agraded dentin stained by coffee and tooth paste containing blue covarine were tested. Measurements were performed with spectroradiometer using a CIE standard illuminant D65 simulator. Color differences and the whitening index(W) were calculated by measurement data. All experimental groups except the dentin groups dipped in distilled water showed significant change towards blue direction (p<0.05). The value of W showed no significant difference (p>0.05). The color difference between water and coffee were not significant in enamel group (p>0.05). The Effect of the toothpaste did not show any significant differences between regular toothpaste and covarine blue (p>0.05). The color changing patterns of blue toothpaste during the first two hours, showed a significant increase in CIE b* values i.e, a loss of whitening effect was observed in this group, but no significant change until occurred for 6 hours (p>0.05).
