The aim of this study is to examine the spatial features of employment distribution pattern in the case of Seoul Metropolitan Area(SMA) between 1995 and 2005.
For this purpose, employment centers in the SMR were identified by the nonparametric approach developed by McMillen(2001). Differing from previous studies, this study measured the net employment density, number of employment divided by urbanized area, rather than gross employment density. In addition, this study identified the urbanized area through remote sensing analysis. One of the key questions of this study concerns the spatial distribution of employment: whether the employment is moving toward scatteration or concentration?
The spatial characteristics of employment distribution were measured by employment share of centers in 1995 and 2005. The finding of this study proved that Seoul has shown concentrated employment pattern while In-Cheon and Gyunggi province have shown scatterized employment pattern.
