The objective of this research is to develop an accurate understanding of Subak and Subakhi and then rediscover their relationship with Takkyon of today. The research will also observe how Subak and Subakhi disappeared from history books in the past but reborn as something for common people, how the two were unified under a common noun of “Subak” and inherited into Takkyon of today, and what’s the relationship between Subakhi and Takkyon. Through the research, the following findings have been generated: Subak and Subakhi evolved to take a multi-layered structure with concepts of a pure martial art and a match game or an entertainment. In the process, the two were converted into a form of exercise to train the body and mind of common people and melted into the entertainment culture of the common people, inheriting over a long period of time. Around the end of the Joseon Dynasty, the two were unified under a common noun of ‘Subak.’ It is believed that Subak contained certain aspects of martial art postures that were consisted of arms postures and straight kicking postures that include some deadly skills that still remain in today’s Takkyon under the title of Yet Bub, or old styles. Meanwhile, Subakhi can be viewed as a Takkyon match of today. Though Takkyon is a martial art match where players hit each other directly by using their bare body, it has long-established rules to ensure a safe match and has noticeably less number of restrictions in terms of rules compared to other martial arts matches. The essence of Takkyon is that the adoption of techniques to restrict hitting postures (e.g., straight kicking) led to a dramatic development in the principles of motions, eventually reaching current peak of evolvement.
