The purpose of this study was to confirm that the urban growth determinants which have leaded the growth of sea port cities in Northeast Asia(South Korea, Japan, China). For this purpose, this study focuses on four important aspects of urban growth theory. The main hypothesis of this study was that the features of urban growth of sea port cities are mainly determined by the influences of growth factors originating from urban economic theory, urban ecological theory, administrative theory and physical environment theory. The major sea port cities in Northeast Asia(Busan, Incheon, Fukuoka, Sanghai) were selected for historical survey because of their growing importance in national land development in terms of strategic location and exchange roles. Multiple Regression Analysis being applied to the relevant data of the 4 sea port cities in Northeast Asia from 1989 to 2008, the following results are obtained: First, the rapid growth of sea port cities seems to have been resulted from the compounding effect of diverse urban growth determinants. Second, it can be said that 4 sea port cities in Northeast Asia can be explained by the interaction of the four sets of determinants identified in this study. As a consequence, most urban growth phenomena of sea port cities in Northeast Asia can be explained by the effective management of these urban growth determinants. Based on these significant research findings, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.
