The objective of this study is to analyze the structural change of import and import-induced effect of IT-manufacturing industry(hereinafter, IT industry) by using the Input-Output Analysis. The result of analysis can be summarized as follows.
First of all, the ratio of the export in IT industry to the whole industry in Korea has been continuously increased to 34.8% in 2007 from 8.9% in 1985. It means that the export of IT industry is very important in the economic development of Korea. Second, the most part of IT imports are attributed to fulfil the export demand in this industry. Third, the inducement of import in IT industry is created by the final demand in this industry, particularly the export demand. Fourth, the coefficient of import-inducement resulted from the final demand in this industry is gradually decreasing year by year. To resolve these problems, the following policies are strongly recommended: 1) to widen the domestic market of IT industry; 2) to improve the value added in this industry, in short to increase the share of domestic production of core parts; 3) to decrease the import-inducement effect of semiconductor industry.
