This paper reevaluates the historical characteristics of the science and technology in King Sejong's era. Most contemporary historians thought that the science and technology in King Sejong's era were the most developed in Korean history and independent from the Chinese ones, which were the most advanced in East Asian scientific community. Furthermore some scholars were proud that Korean science and technology were different from and even superior to Chinese ones at the time, Astronomy, instrumental technology, agricultural technology, indigenous medicine, and Korean letters were conceived as good examples.
However, I do not think the science and technology in King Sejong's era were much different from or superior to Chinese ones, although they became independent since King Sejong's era, King Sejong and scholar-officials conducted scientific project to examine and assimilate Chinese prototypes in diverse fields of science, technology, liberal arts and crafts, The purpose of these projects was to promote Korean science and technology to the level of Chinese, which was the highest in the world at the time, King Sejong believed that these projects would make Korean culture mature and prosperous.
In the fist part of this paper, contemporary perspectives on agricultural technology, indigenous medicine, and Korean letters were critically examined. They were neither independent nor different from Chinese ones; instead they were attempts to introduce, study, and naturalize Chinese counterparts in Korea. In the latter half of the paper, projects of national music and astronomy were analysed. Through those projects, King Sejong wanted to make Korean culture mature and prosperous in the aspect of Confucian ideal.
