This paper provides the results on the study of shape and thickness optimization of shells. The objective of this study is to find the optimum shape and thickness distribution of the shells. In particular, the fundamental frequency to be maximized is considered as the objective function with the volume constraint. The computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) such as Coon patch representation is used to represent the geometry and thickness distribution of shells. In order to calculate natural frequency of the shell, a reliable degenerated shell finite element is adopted. Robust optimization algorithms available in the optimizer DoT are used in the optimization. Finally, a numerical example is provided to briefly show the efficiency of the proposed shell optimization procedure in the vibrational problem.
